Rara Lake is the biggest and deep fresh water in the Himalayas. It is located in Jumla and Mugu district the lake lies at an altitude of 2990masl has water surface of 10.8 km sq. A lake maximum depth of the lake is 167 m and 5.1 km long and 2.7 km wide .it drains into the Mugu, Karnali River via Najir River .Rara Lake being surrounded by Rara national park.the park was established in 1976.the park flora consist of 1074 species of which 16 are endemic to Nepal. The fauna consist of 51 species mammals and 214 species of birds.
The climate of the lake is summer is quite pleasant but winter is cold .The best visiting time to the lake is September, October, April to May and from December to March. The main occupations of the people are agriculture. People also rear goats and extract medicinal herbs and sell them. Rara lake has been popular destination with a very rough route in Nepal for the trekkers .The glimpses of culture and scenery on the way is quite different from the rest of Nepal .the view snow-capped Himalayan peaks enhance the attraction of the trekkers. The trek begins with flight to Jumla (over an hour flight from Kathmandu, Trekkers can fly direct at Talcha airport in Mugu then start trek to Rara lake. Air is the mode of transportation for the visitors visiting the lake.
